About Joseph Aquino
Joseph Aquino was born and raised in Fresno, where he attended Fresno Unified School District for his entire K-12 education. During his time in high school, Joseph had the honor of serving as a Student Board Member on Fresno Unified's Board of Education in 2022, representing over 70,000 students in FUSD. After graduating, Joseph continued his commitment to education by working with the Foundation for Fresno Unified School. There, he played a pivotal role in co-collaborating on district mental health initiatives to support the well-being of students, increasing scholarship awareness, and organizing student success events.
Additionally, Joseph gained hands-on experience in the classroom by assisting 1st-3rd grade students as a teacher's aide for two years. Currently, Joseph is pursuing higher education at Fresno State University, majoring in Political Science. His dedication to public service and his firsthand experience with Fresno Unified Schools drive his passion for making a positive impact on the community.
Priorities
Graduation Rates for English Language Learners
As a champion for equity in education, I am committed to increasing the graduation rates of English Language Learners (ELLs). These students deserve targeted support, including personalized language instruction, mentorship programs, and culturally responsive resources. I will work to ensure ELL students have every opportunity to thrive, succeed, and graduate on time, prepared for life beyond high school.
Improving Math and Literacy Performance
Our students deserve better than the bare minimum in academic performance. With Area 2 currently facing some of the lowest math and literacy scores in Fresno Unified, I will fight for more effective and engaging curriculum reforms, smaller class sizes, and stronger teacher support to get our students back on track. Every child deserves access to the foundational skills necessary to achieve academic success and reach their full potential.
Expanding Mental Health Resources for Students
The mental well-being of our students is essential for their academic success and personal growth. I will advocate for the expansion of mental health services, including more counselors on campuses, mental health awareness programs, and early intervention strategies. By addressing students' emotional and psychological needs, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
